Cabinet Greenlights ₹6,456 Crore for Key Railway Projects

On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) sanctioned three significant railway projects with a total estimated investment of ₹6,456 crore. These projects aim to enhance logistical efficiency and transportation networks across Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh.

Enhancing Connectivity and Mobility

The approved projects will address gaps in connectivity by linking previously unconnected areas, expanding the capacity of existing railway lines, and improving overall mobility within the Indian Railways network. This development is expected to streamline supply chains, stimulate economic growth, and align with the government’s goal of a self-reliant India by generating new job and self-employment opportunities in the targeted regions.

Integration with PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan

These initiatives are integral to the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrating multi-modal connectivity and facilitating the efficient movement of people, goods, and services. The projects will extend the railway network by approximately 300 kilometers, establish 14 new stations, and enhance connectivity to two Aspirational Districts—Nuapada and East Singhbhum. Additionally, they will connect around 1,300 villages, benefiting approximately 30 lakh individuals.

Impact on Freight and Environmental Benefits

Beyond improving regional connectivity, the projects will support the transportation of essential commodities including agricultural products, fertilizers, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, and limestone. The expansion is anticipated to boost freight traffic by 45 million tonnes per annum. Environmentally, the projects are expected to reduce oil imports by 10 crore liters and cut CO2 emissions by 240 crore kg, which is roughly equivalent to planting 9.7 crore trees.
