China has responded to US President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threats on imports from Beijing following plans of retaliatory tariffs on the United States. The Chinese commerce ministry vowed to “fight till the end” amid fears of a tariff war.
Donald Trump gave a deadline of April 8 to the Chinese government to backtrack on its plans to impose 34% tariffs on US imports. The US president claimed that Washington would implement an additional 50% tariff on China by April 9 if this was not done.
China’s commerce ministry stated that Trump’s threats were adding onto the mistakes made by his administration over trade policies, claiming that America was trying to “blackmail” Beijing.
The ministry said, “The U.S. side’s threat to escalate tariffs against China is a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the American side’s blackmailing nature.”
Additionally, the ministry made it clear that the Chinese government was ready to fight against US’ plans if a solution was not reached. “If the U.S. insists on having its way, China will fight to the end.”
Countries like Taiwan and India have expressed their interest in initiating dialogue with the US to find common ground. However, Donald Trump has made it clear that Washington will not indulge in any discussions with Beijing if the 34% tariffs are imposed on US goods.
China would be the worst hit by Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs. If the 50% additional duties are imposed, imports from Beijing could face upto 104% in tariffs. This could be detrimental to products manufactured in China, including tech products. A majority of iPhones sold in the US are still imported from Chinese factories.
