Bigg Boss 18 kicked off on October 6, surprising viewers by introducing a donkey named Gadhraj as the 19th contestant. While the inclusion of Gadhraj was described as a social experiment, the reason for featuring the animal on the show was unclear. However, the decision sparked controversy, as several animal welfare organisations objected to the donkey being kept in captivity.
PETA and PFA Speak Out Against Animal Usage
A few days ago, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) criticised the show’s makers for using an animal for entertainment, deeming it harmful and inappropriate. PETA also wrote to the show’s host, Salman Khan, calling for Gadhraj’s release. Another organisation, People for Animals (PFA), also raised concerns about the donkey’s confinement in the Bigg Boss house. As a result of these objections, the makers decided to release Gadhraj, making him the first contestant to be evicted from the season.
PFA Confirms Gadhraj’s Release
On Thursday, PFA confirmed that Gadhraj had exited the show. In an Instagram post, the organisation thanked Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Chairperson of People for Animals, for her intervention. The statement read, “This success was made possible through the collective efforts of everyone in the community who stood up for the donkey’s release.”

PETA’s Letter to Salman Khan
Earlier in the week, PETA India addressed a letter to Salman Khan after receiving numerous complaints from the public. The letter stated, “We are being inundated with complaints by members of the public who are deeply distressed over the keeping of a donkey in the Bigg Boss house.” PETA urged Salman to ask the show’s makers to release Gadhraj and suggested that contestant Gunaratna Sadavarte, who brought the donkey to the show, should surrender the animal to PETA for rehoming in a sanctuary.
Makers Respond to Criticism
Following the public outcry and objections from animal welfare groups, the Bigg Boss makers decided to release Gadhraj from the show. With Gadhraj’s departure, no other contestant is expected to leave the Bigg Boss house this weekend.
