IMD Red Alert: Chennai’s Transport Hits by Monsoon Fury

Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu were hit by heavy rains on Tuesday, causing knee-deep water in residential areas and streets, leading to traffic congestion and disruption of public transport. The downpour brought widespread flooding, affecting daily life in the city and surrounding regions.

The India Meteorological Department IMD issued red alert for Tamil Nadu, predicting “isolated extremely heavy rainfall” over the next 24 hours. The department has also forecast “very heavy rainfall” for October 17 and 18. Residents are advised to stay indoors, and essential services have been prioritised.

Disruption to Transport Services

Due to the intense rains, several public transport services were suspended. In Chennai, bus services were severely affected in various areas. Southern Railway cancelled four trains between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi due to waterlogging. Additionally, at least eight domestic flights were cancelled as passengers were unable to reach the airport.

Holiday Declared in Coastal Districts Due To IMD Red Alert

In response to the weather warnings, the Tamil Nadu government declared a holiday on October 16 for schools, colleges, and government offices in coastal districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet. Private companies have been asked to allow employees to work from home until October 18.

Government Prepares for Rainfall Impact

State Relief Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni reported that some areas of Chennai recorded as much as 16 cm of rainfall. In preparation for potential emergencies, 26 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed across five coastal districts. Relief centres have also been established, with over 900 shelters ready for those affected by flooding.

Waterlogging and Civic Response Due To Red Alert

Several areas in Chennai, including Pallikaranai and Velachery, experienced severe waterlogging. The Greater Chennai Corporation has been working to pump out excess water and clear fallen trees. Boats have been stationed in flood-prone areas to assist residents, and medical camps are being set up for emergencies.

Weather Conditions and Low Pressure System

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the rainfall is a result of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal that is expected to intensify into a depression. The onset of the northeast monsoon has also contributed to the heavy rains across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and neighbouring states. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.
