IMD Predicts Intense Rainfall Across Several States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka over the next two to three days. Additionally, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are expected to experience significant rainfall as a deep depression has developed over these regions.

Deep Depression Expected to Affect Multiple Regions

According to the IMD, the deep depression currently over eastern Rajasthan is predicted to move west-southwest, impacting South Rajasthan and Gujarat before reaching Saurashtra, Kutch, and parts of Pakistan by August 29. Another low-pressure area has been identified over Bangladesh and adjacent Gangetic West Bengal, which is likely to intensify and move towards Gangetic West Bengal, north Odisha, and Jharkhand in the coming days.

Red Alert Issued for Several Regions

The IMD has issued a red alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall for east and south Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch until August 29. Other regions, including Jharkhand, Odisha, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Konkan, are also expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during this period. The weather department has cautioned that strong winds, with speeds reaching up to 60 kmph, are likely in South Rajasthan on August 27.

Severe Weather Disrupts Life in Gujarat

Heavy rainfall has severely affected daily life in Gujarat, flooding low-lying areas. In response to the adverse weather, the state education department has announced a holiday for primary schools statewide. On Monday, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a virtual meeting with district collectors, police superintendents, and senior civic officials to assess the situation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with the Chief Minister, offering additional assistance, including the deployment of central forces for rescue and disaster management if necessary. Hundreds of residents have been relocated to safer areas due to rising water levels in rivers and dams, with authorities advising people to stay indoors and avoid water bodies.

Sea Conditions and Safety Advisories

The IMD has also reported that rough to very rough sea conditions are expected off the coasts of Gujarat, Pakistan, and north Maharashtra until August 30. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal during this period. The public is also urged to avoid waterlogged areas, check for traffic advisories before traveling, and be prepared for potential localized flooding, road closures, and urban waterlogging.
