A devastating fire broke out in the vehicle parking area of Varanasi’s Cantt railway station in Uttar Pradesh during the early hours of Saturday, leaving at least 200 two-wheelers severely damaged. The fire, which spread rapidly, engulfed the parking lot, as firefighters and police officials worked tirelessly to control the blaze.
Efforts to Control the Blaze
Visuals from the scene show a large inferno, with thick smoke billowing into the sky. Fire brigade personnel and local police were seen attempting to douse the flames. In one of the videos, police officers were observed using a water hose to tackle the fire, while the surrounding area remained shrouded in smoke and haze.
Emergency Response
Around 12 fire brigade vehicles responded to the emergency, along with teams from the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and local law enforcement. Despite the severity of the fire, officials confirmed there were no reports of injuries.
Initial investigations suggest that the fire was triggered by a short circuit. According to CO GRP Kunwar Bahadur Singh, “The fire was due to a short circuit. Some cycles were also burned in the incident. We are continuing our investigation into the matter.”
Railway Employees Affected
The majority of the two-wheelers destroyed in the fire were owned by railway employees, as confirmed by local officials. One railway employee shared his experience, recounting how he had parked his bike around midnight. He was informed by a nearby person that a short circuit had occurred earlier around 11 pm and was reportedly fixed. However, hours later, a passenger alerted him to the large fire. In response, he quickly moved his bike to a different location, but soon after, the fire spread across the entire parking lot.
Fire Extinguished After Two Hours
The blaze was finally brought under control after two hours of intense firefighting efforts. Officials are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the fire.
