US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) in his administration. Trump praised Gabbard as a “proud Republican” who would bring her “fearless spirit” to the intelligence community.
A Bipartisan Figure
Trump highlighted Gabbard’s broad support across party lines, noting her history as a former Democratic presidential contender. “She is now a proud Republican!” Trump said in a statement. He expressed confidence that Gabbard’s bold leadership would strengthen the nation’s intelligence efforts, protect Constitutional rights, and foster peace through strength.
Gabbard’s Background
Although Gabbard lacks direct intelligence experience, she brings extensive leadership and military service. A veteran of the US military for over two decades, she served in the Army National Guard, including deployments to Iraq and Kuwait. Gabbard also represented Hawaii’s second district in Congress from 2013 to 2021 and served on the House Homeland Security Committee.
Political Journey
Gabbard, whose mother converted to Hinduism, became the first Hindu to serve in Congress. Initially a member of the Democratic Party, she ran for president in 2020 but later left the party in 2022, citing its “elitist cabal of warmongers” and “woke” ideology. After switching to the Republican Party, she supported Trump’s 2024 campaign, even assisting with his preparations for debates.
Personal Life
Gabbard is married to cinematographer Abraham Williams. Her father, Mike Gabbard, served as a state senator and originally a Republican before switching to the Democratic Party.
