Uber Technologies (UBER.N) is set to launch an AI assistant, powered by OpenAI’s technology, to support drivers in their transition to electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to reducing emissions.
Commitment to Electric Vehicles
The ride-hailing giant has been advocating for the adoption of EVs for several years and has committed $800 million to assist its driver partners in fully switching to electric vehicles by 2040. This new AI assistant, based on OpenAI’s GPT-4o, was introduced at Uber’s Go-Get Zero event in London on Tuesday.
Personalized Support for Drivers
Scheduled to debut in early 2025 in the United States, the AI assistant will provide personalized responses tailored to drivers’ specific cities and available incentives. Furthermore, Uber plans to expand the chatbot’s functionality to address queries beyond electric vehicles by early 2025.
Rapid Adoption of EVs Among Drivers
Currently, around 180,000 Uber drivers in North America and Europe are transitioning to electric vehicles each month. According to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, “Uber drivers are adopting EVs five times faster than the average motorist in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. In London, nearly 30% of all miles driven on Uber are now electric.”
New Mentorship and Incentive Programs
In addition to the AI assistant, Uber is launching a mentorship program that will connect experienced EV drivers with those looking to make the switch. The company is also offering $50,000 awards to top merchants on its food delivery platform to support their sustainability initiatives and enhance customer outreach.
EV Test Rides for Customers
To further promote electric vehicles, Uber is organizing a series of pop-up events where customers can test drive EVs. In London, users can experience the Lotus Eletre, while those in Los Angeles, Miami, and Dallas will have the opportunity to reserve rides in a Rivian (RIVN.O).
