In a major technological advancement for international cricket, the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will be the first International Cricket Council (ICC) event to utilize the Smart Replay system. According to a statement released by cricket’s global governing body, the system, which has already been seen in action in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) and England’s The Hundred, will be used for the first time at an international level during this tournament.
Tournament Begins October 3
The highly anticipated Women’s T20 World Cup kicks off on October 3, with matches set to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This year’s edition will feature advanced technology, including a minimum of 28 cameras covering every game. Additionally, the Decision Review System (DRS) will be available for all matches, supported by the Hawk-Eye Smart Replay system. This technology allows the TV umpire to instantly review synchronized multi-angle footage, ensuring more accurate and efficient decision-making.
What Is the Smart Replay System?
The Smart Replay system is designed to speed up the decision-making process under the DRS. Traditionally, a TV broadcast director acts as an intermediary between Hawk-Eye operators and the third umpire. With the Smart Replay system, both the operators and the third umpire will be situated in the same room, improving communication and streamlining the review process.
Improved Visuals for Umpires
One of the system’s key features is its ability to provide TV umpires with more visual data than before. This includes access to split-screen images, such as front-on and side-on views during stumpings. In cases where the umpire can clearly see a gap between the bat and ball, they can skip the ultra-edge check and proceed directly to assessing the main part of the dismissal.
Tournament Format and Opening Matches
The ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup will take place in the UAE, with Bangladesh facing Scotland in the opening match on October 3 at 3:30 PM IST in Sharjah. Pakistan and Sri Lanka will follow with their match at 7:30 PM IST on the same day. India’s campaign begins on Friday, October 6, with a match against New Zealand in Dubai, scheduled for 7:30 PM IST. Defending champions Australia, who have won the last three tournaments, will play Sri Lanka in their opening game on October 5 at 3:30 PM IST in Sharjah.
Australia Aims for a Seventh Title
Australia remains the dominant team in Women’s T20 World Cup history, having won six of the eight editions held so far. The only other champions have been England, who won the inaugural edition in 2009, and the West Indies, who took home the title in 2016. Australia will be looking to secure their seventh title this year, while India, who reached the final only once in 2020, will aim to improve on their previous performances.
